sorry to resurrect a 12 month old thread.
do you know of the disney film Big Hero 6? it has these black micro bots that are able to form and build anything just by thought of the controller. they are consciously aware of the location of the other microbots and work together to create any form instantaneously. I don't know much about black goo but I was listening to lee bracker talking about it and the way he described it (and the posts above) immediately made me think of this film.
